Orkestra Simfonike RTSH: Beethoven Concerto No. 5 “Emperor” (De Nadai/Taverna)

21 March, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

The Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major, Op. 73, by Ludwig van Beethoven, also known as the “Emperor” concerto, is one of the greatest masterpieces of the global piano repertoire. Composed between 1809 and 1811, this concerto marks the peak of Beethoven’s creative output in the genre of piano and orchestra concertos.

Beethoven composed this concerto during a difficult period for Vienna, which in 1809 was suffering from bombings by French troops under Napoleon’s leadership. During this time, Beethoven was in a fragile psychological and health condition due to the rapid deterioration of his hearing. Nevertheless, he managed to create a magnificent work, full of energy and triumphant spirit.

Beethoven himself never called this concerto “Emperor.” The title was later given by a French officer, who described the work as “worthy of an emperor.” Ironically, during this time, Beethoven had begun to have conflicted and controversial feelings toward Napoleon, especially after Napoleon declared himself Emperor.

This concerto is also distinguished by its extraordinary balance between the solo piano and the orchestra, elevating the instrument to a more dominant role than ever before. It is considered a precursor to the Romantic concertos and has remained a cornerstone of the piano repertoire.

The “Emperor” Piano Concerto remains a symbol of spiritual triumph over adversity and a testament to Beethoven’s incomparable genius.

You will have the opportunity to hear it performed by pianist Alessandro Taverna and the RTSH Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Eddi De Nadai, on Friday.
